Waiting on God and asking "Why me?"

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

My faith step into the unknown.

My first major question to God was "Why Me?"

“What do you do... when you don't know what to do?

This is the question I've faced over and over again. And I just now figured it out.

When you don't know what to do... you go to God. That doesn't sound like much of a surprise I imagine.

But how do you do it?

How do you know it's His voice?

Before I could get to any of my most searing questions, I had to start with the first one:

"Why me?"

It dawned on me recently that I was proud of the fact I've never been out of work. I would end one job and immediately start the next one.

I'll get to the reason why in a later post.

But for now, I want to share what my life looked like from the inside several weeks ago.

You might be familiar with my tradition vocation. I've worked as a journalist, mainly on television, as a reporter and anchor for 20 years.

About a year or so ago, my wife and I started feeling like God was trying to get our attention.

Things were going haywire at work.

I wasn't nearly as active in service to the Lord as I'm used to.

We had a wonderful house in a wonderful neighborhood...

I had a great salary...

But there was emptiness.

We didn't feel like we were HOME.

Fast forward to the end of 2018 and I was approached by my employer about renewing my contract.

The work environment had gotten even more tumultuous...

And I was feeling God wasn't allowing me to sign another contract.

As I describe it, I felt I would've had to grab my hand and force myself to place my signature on the contract.

This might sound like plain old unhappiness - someone who was unfulfilled at work due to the normal reasons: Salary, work environment, personal goals, etc.

But this was spiritual.

My wife and I fasted a prayed.

And it was clear as day...

I couldn't sign.

But then what?

If God's speaking... shouldn't He give me some kind of blueprint?

Nope.

That's not in the plan...

I came across this scripture that blessed my soul:

"It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings." -Proverbs 25:2 NIV

Here's the thing...

If you're waiting on God to lay it all out for you...

You can keep waiting...

Or you can put your FAITH into action.

The more I waited on God to give me an audible voice from heaven (That would've been great BTW 😁 )...

The more I realized...

God was waiting on me.

You see it's our FAITH that matters to God:

"And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." -Hebrews 11:6 NIV

Faith matters...

Because it's how we spend time with God.

Think about it.

You can't see Him.

You can't touch Him.

But you can touch His heart.

You can CHOOSE HIM.

You can choose His ways... instead of your ways.

And getting "blessings" isn't the point.

God wants to give you the best life possible...

And it only comes from getting as much of His PRESENCE as you can handle.

When we exercise our faith, we're choosing our relationship with God over EVERYTHING else.

And naturally, out of that devotion and walking with the Lord... we get the BEST gift of all...

Him.

So...

I decided...

I might now know where my next paycheck comes from... (I do know WHO it comes from 🙏)

So to answer the question... "Why me?"

Because God sees my future much better than I do.

And He knows it's gonna take my FAITH to get there.

It's gonna take my relationship with Jesus to get there.

I hope this blesses you as it blessed me.
