Familiar Spirits: What Are They? How Do You Get Free?

Updated: Jan 11, 2023

YOU CAN BE FREE!

As we enter into a new year and many people are fasting and praying, I feel led to teach about familiar spirits.

I believe the Lord would like us to know these spirits for what they are, so we can recognize them and their actions in our families and households.

This way, we can fight against them.

You have the authority to remove familiar spirits.

Listen to what the Word of God says about Saul:

"...And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land."

1 Samuel 28:3 (KJV)

This honors the Lord.

To do away with familiar spirits is your right and should be your testimony!

"Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I [am] the LORD your God."

Leviticus 19:31 (KJV)

WHAT ARE FAMILIAR SPIRITS?

The Lord wants us to be free from the influence of familiar spirits. They are influencers. They impact your environment. They impact your life. They impact your thoughts. They will draw you away from the truth. They can hold you in bondage unless the Lord sets you free by His Word.

The Word says familiar spirits will “defile” you.

So, it’s important that we understand what defile means.

Here is the Merriam-Webster definition of "defile":

“defile”

: to make unclean or impure
: to corrupt the purity or perfection of
: DEBASE
: to violate the chastity or virginity of
: DEFLOWER
: to make physically unclean especially with something unpleasant or contaminating
: to violate the sanctity of
: DESECRATE (defile a sanctuary)
: SULLY, DISHONOR

Familiar spirits are lumped together in scripture with wizards, charmers, and people who seek the dead. These spirits drive people toward utter darkness, and away from the goodness of the Lord.

God seeks to protect us from these spiritual influences.

“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer."

Deuteronomy 18:10-11 (NKJV)

WHY FIGHT?

Why does the Lord want us to do away with familiar spirits?

Because they cut us off from our inheritance! You cannot possibly live within the goodness of God and the fullness of joy, if you are being oppressed by familiar spirits.

What makes them familiar?

Let us take a look at what the word "familiar" means in the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

"familiar"
noun

: a member of the household of a high official
: one who is often seen and well known
: an intimate associate : COMPANION
: a spirit often embodied in an animal and held to attend and serve or guard a person
: one who is well acquainted with something
: one who frequents a place

"familiar"
adjective

: closely acquainted
: INTIMATE (a familiar family friend)
: of or relating to a family
: frequented by families
: being free and easy
: marked by informality
: overly free and unrestrained
: PRESUMPTUOUS (grossly familiar behavior)
: moderately tame
familiar animals
: frequently seen or experienced : easily recognized
: of everyday occurrence (a familiar routine)
: possibly known but imperfectly remembered
: having personal or intimate knowledge

Familiar spirits are called familiar because they are something you are used to! You don't seem to mind as much, because you've always dealt with the perverse behavior, or motives, or pain.

You see them in your family. You might have even lost hope because the issue is so pervasive and common in your life, or your family.

But be encouraged, you can be free.

The Lord brings freedom by His Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:17).

STEPS TO FREEDOM

Here are some simple steps toward freedom from familiar spirits:

1. Ask the Lord to show you by His Spirit and His Word to expose the familiar spirits in your life.

They can be easily found by examining cycles of behavior in your life. (1 Samuel 17:16)

2. Confess the behavior that you have been doing.

Take responsibility and accountability for what you have done. Eliminate the blame game. Don't blame your parents, or anyone else. You have made your own decisions to sin. Confess your sin to the Lord. (1 John 1:9)

3. Repent by turning away from the mindset that agrees with this behavior, and turn toward the beauty of the Lord and His holiness.

This cuts off the enemy from having a "right" to influence you. Once you turn away and turn to God, you are under His authority and headship. You are in receipt of the promises of God that you had forfeited by walking out of the way of the Lord. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

4. Renounce the behavior that agreed with the enemy's scheme.

Wherever you willfully fell into sin and followed after sin, you have given over authority to the enemy in that area of your life. When you renounce hidden things of dishonesty in your heart, you remove the agreement with the enemy. You effectively cancel the covenant relationship with that spirit. (2 Corinthians 4:2)

5. Feel free to call out the spirits by name as you do this.

Unclean spirits manifest, illustrate, execute, and behave the way they are named. A "mute" spirit will produce muteness. A "deaf" spirit will produce deafness, and so on. (Mark 9:29)

6. Seek the joy of the Lord in His presence daily.

Walk with the Lord. Learn of His goodness and His love. Invite the Lord more and more into your life by spending time with Him. Trust Him to lead and guide you into all truth. (Psalm 51:10-13)

NOTE: The most important element in all of this is the Word of God. The Word gives us the truth and it cuts us away from our carnal ways. Read the Word as it relates to the specific sin and cycle you are dealing with. The familiar spirits will take advantage of our ignorance of the Word. The Word will guide you to freedom! (Hebrews 4:12, Psalm 119:11, Hosea 4:6, John 8:36)

If you try this and none it works for you, there might be a hidden gate into your soul that you might need help finding and closing to the enemy. Please prayerfully consider reaching out to a reputable, Christian deliverance ministry for personal attention to your situation.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS JESUS

None of this is important, none of this works, if you don't have Jesus in your heart. Jesus came to set us free (Psalm 61:1). If you are ready to receive the love and freedom in Christ Jesus, all you need to do is receive Him by faith.

Jesus came to show us the heart of our Father in heaven. He did this most beautifully when He gave His perfect, sinless life on the cross. He who knew no sin, became sin for us, that we might be call the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). His perfect, sinless sacrifice allowed Him to voluntarily take our sins away. He took the death we deserved. And then, Jesus rose on the third day in total power and authority. He give us new life in Him! He's not dead, so those who have Him, have life!

YOU CAN RECEIVE THE LOVE OF JESUS NOW!

If you want to know the Lord Jesus and the freedom He brings, please pray this prayer with me:

"Lord, I'm ready. I give you my heart. I am a sinner and I can't save myself. I give my life to you and I just want all the love that you have for me. I believe in you. I trust you. I believe you gave your perfect life for me and you are alive right now. Come alive in me Lord. I love you and I want to know you. Amen."

That's it! You're in the family and now you have access to the abundant promises of God. Every last one of them! So, now it's time to live in those promises. I would recommend you find a strong, loving, Bible-teaching Church to fellowship with God's people and learn from them. Make time to read the Word (use a Bible you can understand). And watch how the Lord uses His Holy Spirit to change you from the inside out! You'll never be the same!

If we can help you in any way in this ministry, please let us know. Simply send us an email to mail@faithfireworldwide.com

God bless you.

Go in His peace.

Love,
